First and foremost, let’s be clear: viewership and ticket sales must be strong enough for it to make ‘¢ents’.
Secondly, how ignorant can the host be? This isn’t solely about gender equality; it’s about entertainment and the willingness of people to pay for it. Any two singers can perform the same song, but not every singer will receive the same compensation as Adele, Beyoncé, or Lady Gaga. Similarly, Minor League Baseball players are part of the same sport as Major League Baseball players, yet they are not compensated equally. When women’s sports start attracting large crowds willing to pay premium prices and command high-paying sponsors, that’s when WNBA salaries will see an increase. Simply demanding higher pay without the corresponding audience to support it and fill arenas is not enough.
The WNBA and Women’s Soccer Leagues need to deliver. Look at how Taylor Swift surpassed male artists by providing an experience that people worldwide are eager to pay top dollar for. When you truly deliver quality, people will be willing to pay for it. If you can’t attract financial support from fans, it may indicate that you aren’t meeting their expectations.
