New Release: Citizen Promaster Aqualand 40th Anniversary Limited-Edition Watch

Man At His Best: Gear

Outside of relatively early advancements like the unidirectional bezel and the helium escape valve, there truly aren’t that many revolutionary “quantum leap” innovations in the history of dive watches. 40 years on from its initial release, though, the original Citizen Aqualand remains virtually unmatched in its electronic depth gauge functionality. Lending vital information to divers and paving the way for the modern dive computer, the Aqualand is a fascinating point in dive watch evolution and an enduring favorite among fans of the brand. For summer 2025, the Japanese giant looks to pay tribute to this high-tech classic with a new commemorative version, combining the radical form and functionality of the original with premium modern materials and finishing. The resulting Citizen Promaster Aqualand 40th Anniversary Limited Edition is an ultra-capable love letter to the brand’s diving heritage, with an impressively faithful look.

While the Citizen Promaster Aqualand 40th Anniversary Limited Edition’s 50.7mm wide, 14.8mm thick case specifications may sound dauntingly massive at first glance, these numbers are likely to be deceptive. Like its 1985 predecessor, this case is made from deep gray matte-blasted stainless steel with yellow gold tone accents, and the form is near-identical to its forebear in images as well. Of course, the first element that jumps out in images is the Aqualand’s signature electronic depth sensor at 9 o’clock. Extended out from the case side on a broad flange and topped with a striking, vented gold-tone cap, this component lends the design its asymmetrical, arguably ungainly, utilitarian silhouette. Without this protrusion, comparable vintage models measure in at a still-sizeable 44mm wide, and the rest of the design is classic Citizen tool diver in photos. Heavy flares extend past the rounded case sides to protect the pushers and 4 o’clock crown, while the knurled, gold-tone bezel is topped with an ultra-legible full-scale dive insert. Interestingly, despite initially appearing like a commemorative colorway, this two-tone look faithfully harkens back to the very first Aqualand. Capped with a simple laser-engraved screw-down caseback, the Aqualand 40th Anniversary Limited Edition’s case offers a dive-ready 200 meters of water resistance.

Like the case, the Citizen Promaster Aqualand 40th Anniversary Limited Edition’s ana-digi dial is a faithfully executed ‘80s throwback. The majority of this black sunburst dial design is ultra-legible and chunky in initial images, with broad, generously lume-filled printed wedge indices complemented by Citizen’s familiar cathedral-and-arrow diver handset. An orange minute hand works to make this combination even more legible and visually arresting at a glance, but the natural center of attention is the 12 o’clock digital subdial. Usable as both a 1/100-second chronograph and the line’s defining digital depth gauge, this display amplifies the throwback feel of the design in images while also lending it its most distinctive, impressive functionality.

Citizen powers the Promaster Aqualand 40th Anniversary Limited Edition with its in-house Cal.C520 quartz movement. In addition to its chronograph, calendar, programmable alarm, and depth gauge complications, the Cal.C520 offers one more crucial tool for serious divers: an ascent rate alarm. To avoid the painful and potentially deadly “bends,” the Cal.C520 alerts wearers when ascent speeds exceed safe limits. It’s a genuinely brilliant addition to a diver design, and one way the Aqualand remains an innovator four decades on. A decent if unspectacular +20/-20 seconds per month accuracy rating completes the specifications here. To complete the design, Citizen fits the watch with a classic accordion-style black dive strap. Rather than the usual FKM or silicone rubber, however, Citizen crafts this strap from BENEBiOL, a high-tech plant-based polyurethane compound. Both less environmentally damaging than conventional rubber and more resistant to wear from hydrolysis, this BENEBiOL strap seems like a natural match for the watch on paper, but it’s impossible to vouch for comfort without handling these in person.

Throughout the history of the dive watch, there have only been a handful of truly revolutionary advancements. Although it may not have reshaped the rest of the watch market, the original 1985 Citizen Aqualand’s cutting-edge digital depth gauge was nonetheless a rare quantum leap in diver technology, and it remains a cult favorite 40 years on. The new Citizen Promaster Aqualand 40th Anniversary Limited Edition faithfully recreates this piece of high-tech history for modern audiences, complete with more refined execution and new functionality aimed at the serious underwater adventurer. Only 5,800 examples of the Citizen Promaster Aqualand 40th Anniversary Limited Edition will be made, and the watch will be available through authorized dealers in July 2025. MSRP for this watch stands at $595 USD as of press time. For more information, please visit the brand’s website.
